The Cathedral of San Lorenzo
The Duomo of Genoa, with its black and white facade, has stood out among the stores of the historic center for more than 1000 years. It is not only an example of Gothic architecture but a real treasure chest of mysteries and legends lost among the centuries...
The "Emerald" Sacred Basin
In the basement of the Duomo is kept the Sacred Basin, a bright green dish which is said to have been present during Jesus “Last Supper” with his apostles. The legend wanted it to be made of emerald and this only increased the eagerness around this relic, which was recovered and brought to the city by Genoese soldiers during the ancient Crusades.
San Giovanni “Tray”
Another artifact kept in the Cathedral is the "Tray of San Giovanni", a tray that legend places at the famous banquet of Herod around 50 AD. It is said, in fact, that it was used to lay the head of St. John the Baptist after his decapitation by Herod himself, at the whim of Princess Salome.
The mysterious bas-relief of the dog
On the front facade of the cathedral it is possible to observe a small bas-relief depicting a resting dog. It would be a dedication of a craftsman engaged in the construction of the cathedral who wanted to dedicate a tribute for the recent loss of his four-legged friend
