Palazzo Ducale
Majestic and rich in history, the Palazzo Ducale of Genoa is one of the city’s most beloved landmarks. Built at the end of the 13th century, it was for centuries the political heart of the Maritime Republic and the official residence of the first Doge, Simone Boccanegra.
The golden age and architectural rebirth
In the 16th century, the architect Andrea Ceresola, known as “Il Vannone”, gave new life to the Palazzo Ducale by transforming it into a magnificent Renaissance residence, a symbol of the power and prestige of the Republic of Genoa. The building was enriched with large inner courtyards, grand staircases, and lavishly decorated halls, becoming the setting for receptions, ceremonies, and government meetings.
In the following centuries, the palace underwent further changes and, after the devastating fire of 1777, was restored in elegant neoclassical forms that enhanced its harmony and brightness. The restoration returned to the city an architectural masterpiece, confirming it as one of the most representative and beloved works of Genoa’s heritage.
Today
Today, it has evolved from being a seat of power into a dynamic cultural center capable of hosting exhibitions, events, and international showcases, while maintaining its deep connection with the history and artistic soul of the city.
