The exhibition celebrates that extraordinary artistic period, spanning roughly from 1600 to 1750, in which the contribution of renowned foreign artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, and Puget, together with brilliant local talents like Bernardo Strozzi, Valerio Castello, and Gregorio De Ferrari, gave rise to a uniquely dynamic, exuberant, and innovative expression of the Baroque style.

A comprehensive selection of works by the Genoese masters who most strongly shaped the development of the art of the “Superba” (Genoa). Through a rigorous selection of just one or two particularly emblematic works for each artist, it is possible to follow step by step the stages of a journey that begins with the key role played at the start of the 17th century by Giovan Battista Paggi and concludes in the mid-18th century with the visionary work of Alessandro Magnasco.

Being able to rely on the large exhibition spaces offered by Palazzo Ducale di Genova, the selection of works has focused on large-format paintings—some altarpieces, but above all large “room paintings” with sacred or secular subjects—in some cases previously unseen, and in several cases never before shown in Genoa.

Alongside the predominant sequence of paintings on canvas, there is a small but extraordinary group of sculptures—both in marble and wood—by the most renowned masters, in order to illustrate the strong synergy that, especially after the mid-17th century, brought together painting and sculpture in Genoese workshops.

A series of initiatives in Genoa is dedicated to certain painters and sculptors, brought together under the title The Protagonists and set up concurrently with the exhibition at Palazzo Ducale di Genova in various city museums and historic residences. These events focus, in a monographic perspective, on individual artistic figures.
