Palazzo Ducale di Genova hosts the largest and most comprehensive retrospective exhibition dedicated to the great Dutch genius Maurits Cornelis Escher, who is today one of the most beloved artists worldwide, and whose impossible worlds have entered the collective imagination, making him a true icon of modern art.

With over 200 works and his most representative pieces such as Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938), and the series Emblemata, the exhibition presents an overview of his entire and extensive artistic production.

Blending art, mathematics, science, physics, nature, and design, the Escher exhibition is a unique event to get to know more closely an artist who was restless and reserved, yet undeniably brilliant, and to actively engage with the many perspectival, geometric, and compositional paradoxes that underpin his works—paradoxes that continue to inspire generations of new artists across all fields to this day.

Within the exhibition, it will also be possible to explore Escher’s imaginative universe through new immersive rooms and impossible structures, which will be compared with works by great visionary artists such as Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) and Victor Vasarely (1906–1997).
