Deredia in Genoa. The sphere between two worlds

Deredia a Genova. The Sphere Between Two Worlds

The works of Jorge Jiménez Martínez, known by his artist name Deredia—a Costa Rican artist who trained in Italy, particularly in Liguria, where he has lived and worked for many years—have been installed in the heart of our city: eight marble and bronze statues that trace an imaginary route from the Old Port to Brignole Station, passing through Piazza Matteotti and Piazza De Ferrari.

“Incanto,” “Rifugio,” “Arrullo,” and “Il viaggio” are the titles of the four works in Deredia’s exhibition, which can be viewed at Genoa’s Old Port every day simply by strolling from Calata Falcone Borsellino to Piazzale Mandraccio and the Magazzini del Cotone.

Deredia is no stranger to this type of monumental open-air exhibition that “takes over” urban spaces. After Rome, Florence, Miami, Mexico City, and many other locations around the world, the exhibition’s arrival in Genoa represents the natural evolution of a truly extraordinary and unprecedented journey: in fact, 7 of the 8 monumental works in “Deredia in Genoa” are being presented to the public for the first time.

The spherical and oval shapes—recurring elements in Deredia’s imagination and works—guide the audience along a unique, harmonious path that winds through the heart of our city, in what is also a spiritual journey toward the light, toward the sun, in search of that awareness which is the basis of all transformation and the foundation for the fulfillment of the universe’s destiny.
